| The
Channel 4 Theatre Director Scheme is open to any theatre in the UK
with a committed policy of training. There is always a waiting list
of such theatres and those taking part are announced at the time of
calling candidates for their initial interview. Every year THREE bursaries
are awarded, each for a period of ONE YEAR. The annual award per trainee
is £10,000, tax free, which is paid in quarterly instalments.
On completion of the bursary the participating theatres are required,
at their own expense, to offer the trainee a further six-month contract
so that he/she might direct a production of their own, either main-house
or studio. Funding of up to £5,000 is made available by Channel
4 towards each production.Applications
for the awards are invited early each year through this website, through
an advertisement in THE STAGE and by direct mail to theatres, colleges,
universities and scholastic institutions. The application form consists
of set questions which, when completed, are read by a special panel
recruited from the theatre. Each year we receive over 300 applications
for places on the Scheme. Of these up to 30 are called for interview
during a period of three days and from these 8 are selected for a
final interview with the Artistic Directors of the theatres taking
part.Once assigned
to their respective theatres each trainee receives a schedule of training
(see Guidelines for Training) agreed between the theatre and the Administrator
of the Scheme. Progress is monitored by the theatre and reports submitted
to the Administrator on a six-monthly basis, and trainees themselves
are invited to comment on their training. These reports are then forwarded
to the respective sponsors of the bursaries.
